Le Dîner en Blanc – Sydney celebrated 5-year Anniversary!

The love story between Le Dîner en Blanc and the city of Sydney began after spending an unforgettable night under the Paris sky and the glow of Notre-Dame, Antoine and Rachel Bessis are convinced they have to bring the event home. And they did! On November 19th of 2016, the chic picnic celebrated its 5-year anniversary. To mark the event, we took the opportunity to get the inside scoop on what the last five years have been like.

“There is a genuine sense of community,” our hosts say. “The bonds that are made in preparation of the event and the encounters friendships that happen on the night” are just “some of the glorious moments” Le Dîner en Blanc helps to bring together.

Le Dîner en Blanc is a celebration of friendship, the art of living but also the city and its most prestigious and iconic public spaces. As we all know, Sydney possesses one of the most recognized and famous places on the planet: the Sydney Opera House.  It was 4 years in them making but in 2015, 4000 guests dined and danced on the steps of this prestigious building.

From its debut in 2012 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Le Dîner en Blanc – Sydney charmed its guests and continued to do so with following and successful editions at Bondi Beach (2013), and Centennial Park (2014).

“For us, it has been a fun journey about developing narratives that could take Diner en Blanc from an urban context to the entire spectrum of locations that Sydney has to offer, more nature oriented and yet as iconic spaces … Sydney is a spectacular mix of great architecture and natural spaces. We keep that in mind when we plan our secret locations.”

For each edition our hosts have first and foremost their guests in mind. And since Sydney-siders “truly love their food, their fashion, their music and above all being outside” hosts do their absolute best to find that perfect spot to entertain guests for a night they’ll never forget.

For this 5-Year Anniversary, the ‘secret’ location was a whole new adventure! 5000 elegant revelers with tables, chairs and gourmet picnic baskets in tow took the ferry and descended upon Cockatoo Island.  Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and located in the Sydney Harbour, the island was very fitting for this milestone edition!

The evening is known for its traditions and visually stunning moments like the waving of white napkins to mark the beginning of the dinner and the lighting of sparklers to announce the opening of the dance floor. To round the night off, guests were treated to the classic French film, Contempt, featuring legendary French actress, Brigitte Bardot, which was projected onto the side of the island’s cliff face.

Le Dîner en Blanc - Sydney hosts were pleased to have so many people join the festivities and look forward to celebrate Le Diner en Blanc for many years to come, at many more of Sydney’s stunning outdoor spaces and iconic locations.
